How to shortlist the best streaming services for live TV
Make a table with your five must-have channels as rows and the packages you are considering as columns. Remove options that miss an essential station, then compare DVR conditions and the cost after introductory offers end. This makes the choice specific to your household instead of treating a national headline price as the right answer for every address.
Compare live TV streaming services using the channels you watch, not the largest advertised channel count. The most useful shortlist starts with your local stations, regular programmes and live events, then considers DVR, household limits and the full subscription total.
Build a like-for-like comparison
Use the official regional sites for YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling, Fubo and DIRECTV when researching US options. Check the actual package and location rather than assuming the brand's headline offer includes everything you need.
Canadian viewers should compare Canadian packages and broadcaster offerings. A US lineup or promotion does not establish Canadian availability. Check currency, regional feeds and account conditions on the service's own local pages.
New checklist: channels, recordings and screens
- Local stations: use the provider's address or ZIP-code lookup.
- Sports: verify the particular game and any regional restrictions.
- DVR: check storage, retention, recording restrictions and playback controls.
- Household: compare simultaneous streams and home-network conditions.
- Total price: include required add-ons and the post-promotion renewal price.
Test the routine you will use
If a trial is available, test channel changes, guide navigation and a recording on your normal device. Try the service during your regular viewing hours. Keep a short record of any problem, including the channel, time and device, so support has something specific to investigate.
When a smaller package is enough
If only a handful of programmes matter to you, compare the cost of the package that actually includes them. Do not add several overlapping subscriptions without checking what each one contributes. For films rather than scheduled channels, use our movie service guide. For event-led viewing, see the sports subscription checklist.
