Hulu vs Disney+ (2026): Which One Do You Actually Need?

Hulu vs Disney+ (2026): Which One Do You Actually Need?

Here is something that confuses a lot of people.

Disney owns both Hulu and Disney Plus. The same company. Same parent. But the two services could not be more different. One is for adults who watch network TV. The other is for families who watch Marvel and Star Wars.

I have subscribed to both since they launched. I have watched Hulu for next day network shows. I have watched Disney Plus for every Marvel movie. And I have learned exactly when you need one, when you need both, and when you should just buy the Disney Bundle.

This guide compares Hulu and Disney Plus directly. Price. Content. Ads. Live TV. The Disney Bundle. Everything you need to decide which service belongs in your household.

The Short Answer

Choose Hulu if you watch current network TV shows like Abbott Elementary, The Bachelor, The Voice, or any ABC, NBC, or Fox show the day after it airs. Hulu also has FX on Hulu, which gives you The Bear and Shōgun.

Choose Disney Plus if you have children, or if you are a hardcore Marvel or Star Wars fan. Disney Plus has every Marvel movie, every Star Wars movie, every Pixar film, and every Disney animation classic. For families, it is essential.

Get the Disney Bundle instead of choosing. For fifteen dollars per month, you get Disney Plus, Hulu with Ads, and ESPN Plus. That is cheaper than buying Hulu No Ads by itself. It is the smartest way to get both services.

Do not choose one over the other. They serve completely different audiences. Most households need both or neither.

Price Comparison

Both services have ad supported and ad free tiers. Here is how they compare.

PlanHulu PriceDisney+ Price
With Ads$7.99$7.99
Ad Free (No Ads)$17.99$13.99 (Premium)
4K IncludedNoYes on Premium
Live TV Option$76.99 (Hulu + Live TV)Not available

Disney Plus is cheaper for ad free viewing. Thirteen dollars versus eighteen dollars. That is a five dollar difference.

But Hulu offers something Disney Plus does not. A live TV option. If you want to replace cable, Hulu + Live TV costs seventy seven dollars per month and includes over ninety channels plus the entire Hulu library.

Disney Plus has no live TV. No news. No sports (except what is on ESPN Plus, which is separate).

Content Comparison

This is where the two services are completely different. They barely overlap.

Hulu content library:

  • Next day network TV (ABC, NBC, Fox shows appear within 24 hours)
  • FX on Hulu (The Bear, Shōgun, American Horror Story, Atlanta, Fargo)
  • Hulu originals (Only Murders in the Building, The Handmaids Tale, The Great)
  • Reality TV (The Bachelor, The Kardashians, Love Island)
  • Licensed movies from older studios
  • Adult animation (Family Guy, Bobs Burgers, Futurama)

Disney Plus content library:

  • Marvel Cinematic Universe (every movie and every show)
  • Star Wars (every movie and every show)
  • Pixar (every movie and every short)
  • Disney animation (classics like The Lion King, Aladdin, Frozen)
  • Disney live action (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast)
  • National Geographic (documentaries)
  • Fox content (The Simpsons, Home Alone, Die Hard, Avatar)

Hulu is for adults who watch television shows. Disney Plus is for families who watch movies and franchises.

If you watch The Bear or Abbott Elementary, you need Hulu. If you watch Marvel or Star Wars, you need Disney Plus. They do not compete. They complement.

Original Content Quality

Hulu originals: Only Murders in the Building is excellent. The Handmaids Tale is award winning. The Great is funny and smart. But Hulu does not produce as many originals as Netflix or Max.

Disney Plus originals: Marvel shows like Loki and Wandavision are high budget event television. Star Wars shows like The Mandalorian and Andor are critically acclaimed. But Disney Plus originals are all franchise based. No standalone dramas or comedies.

If you want original stories, Hulu is better. If you want franchise content, Disney Plus is better.

Ads Experience

Both services have ad supported tiers. The experience is different.

Hulu with Ads: Six to eight minutes of ads per hour. Ad breaks are long, often sixty to ninety seconds. Hulu has the most ads of any major streaming service. The same commercials repeat over and over, which gets annoying fast.

Disney Plus with Ads: Four to five minutes of ads per hour. Ad breaks are shorter, usually thirty to sixty seconds. Disney Plus ads are less intrusive than Hulu. But they still interrupt the flow of movies.

Disney Plus has the better ad experience. Fewer ads. Shorter breaks. Less repetition.

But the real answer is to get the Disney Bundle with Hulu with Ads and Disney Plus Premium. That gives you the best of both worlds. Hulu with ads is tolerable when you are not paying full price for it.

Live TV – Hulu Only

Disney Plus has no live TV. Zero. Nothing. If you want to watch live news, live sports, or live events, Disney Plus cannot help you.

Hulu has Hulu + Live TV. It costs seventy seven dollars per month and includes over ninety channels including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, TNT, TBS, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.

Hulu + Live TV also includes unlimited DVR, streaming on unlimited devices at home, and access to the entire Hulu on demand library.

If you want to cut cable, Hulu + Live TV is a strong option. Disney Plus cannot compete here because it does not offer live TV at all.

The Disney Bundle – The Real Answer

Here is the thing that most comparison guides do not tell you.

You do not have to choose between Hulu and Disney Plus. Disney wants you to buy both. That is why they created the Disney Bundle.

Disney Bundle Trio ($14.99 per month):

  • Disney Plus (with no ads on the Premium plan)
  • Hulu (with ads)
  • ESPN Plus (with ads)

That is fifteen dollars per month for three services. Compare that to buying Hulu No Ads by itself for eighteen dollars. The Disney Bundle gives you more for less money.

The only catch is that Hulu comes with ads in the bundle. If you hate ads, you can upgrade to Hulu No Ads for an extra six dollars per month, bringing the total to twenty one dollars.

But for most people, the standard Disney Bundle is the best deal in streaming. You get Disney Plus for Marvel and Star Wars. You get Hulu for next day TV. You get ESPN Plus for college sports and UFC. All for fifteen dollars.

4K and Streaming Quality

This is not close.

Hulu: Almost no 4K content. A handful of originals are available in 4K, but most content is 1080p. The Hulu app buffers more often than Disney Plus during high traffic events.

Disney Plus: 4K HDR on all Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney originals. IMAX Enhanced on select Marvel films, which gives you a taller aspect ratio. The video quality is excellent. Dolby Atmos on supported content.

If 4K matters to you, Disney Plus is the only choice. Hulu does not compete here.

Offline Downloads

Both services offer offline downloads on their ad free plans.

Hulu: Downloads available on No Ads plan. The feature works fine. But downloads expire faster than Disney Plus. Some content expires after seven days.

Disney Plus: Downloads available on Premium plan. You can download to up to ten devices. Downloads expire after thirty days. The feature works well for keeping kids entertained on flights.

Disney Plus wins here. Longer expiration and higher device limit.

Which One Should You Keep?

Here is my honest advice.

Keep Hulu if you watch current network TV. If you need to watch Abbott Elementary or The Bachelor or The Voice the day after it airs, Hulu is the only option. Nothing else gives you that.

Keep Disney Plus if you have children or love Marvel and Star Wars. For families, Disney Plus is essential. Your kids will want to watch Encanto and Frozen on repeat. Let them.

Get the Disney Bundle instead of choosing. Fifteen dollars per month for Disney Plus, Hulu with Ads, and ESPN Plus. That is the smartest way to get both services.

Do not subscribe to Hulu No Ads by itself. Eighteen dollars is too expensive. Get the Disney Bundle for fifteen dollars and tolerate the ads on Hulu. Or upgrade the bundle to Hulu No Ads for twenty one dollars, which is still cheaper than buying Hulu No Ads alone.
